I'm a digital designer based in Sheffield, I graduated from Sheffield Hallam in 2015 with a first class MDes degree. In my current role I'm a digital designer, specialising in user interface and user experience design for projects in both the public sector such as Public Health England and the private sector.
I wanted to combine my love of print with my new found skills in digital design and was given the opportunity to bring the two together. 600 people was travelling performance piece based around people and space which needed collateral to promote it. I used the opportunity to take a key theme in the performance on the golden record to create an interactive poster using conductive ink and an Arduino to generate sounds form the record on touch. Each circle represents a different sound sent to space and pays that sound when the user touches it. The piece was lightweight allowing it to travel well and very low cost to make.
In my current role I joined the team working on the new Public Health England Intranet as the lead designer. We took the work done in discovery and alpha to build a new beta site to be release to around 100 employees for closed beta testing. I worked alongside a content designer and user research to develop a UI and UX which presents PHE's internal brand but also follows accessibility principles. The three main themes we worked towards and achieved were
We create consistency within content pages, designed for version control and content ownership. We simplified the search functionality, updated the search UI and created new ways to filter content. Alongside this we also designed a front-end content editor to allow users to curate content without logging into the CMS admin.
The intranet is currently in closed beta testing with over 100 users and stakeholders.
Working with the team at VIX we recently developed an asset library for Digital Health in the North. To support the new site the organisations needed a new brand to bring together the 4 companies involved.
We designed a built a very simple but effective UI. Allowing users to quickly filter and search for complex assets.
Whilst studying for my MDes at Sheffield Hallam myself along with two other were asked to design the 2015 design grad book for the graduation show. The book needed to encompass SHU Design brand but showcase each students work, from illustration to digital design and was under the restraints of a tight budget. We worked with Evolution, based in Sheffield, to print a beautiful, clean A5 book with gold and clear spot UV.
Along side the SHU grad book we were also asked to design a supporting booklet which showcased the best designs from the 600 People project that year. There was a very limited budget for this so to keep within than we decide on a one colour print to give a zine inspired feel. We kept cost low by using a fold rather than a bind to give a book like feel.
Within my current role we worked on developing a new mobile application designed to help cyclist become more social and grow the cycling community. The app allowed users to create and find open rides which other cyclists could join. For this we created a brand & identity along with an MVP prototype app using sketch and InVision.
Whilst working for a small design agency I worked with Ragtrade. I supported their move to email campaigns by creating digital artwork alongside print material for a number of fashion editorials.
I create bespoke illustrations to support both digital and print content. Recent examples of this include diagrams and illustrations to support internal documents made by NHS England, to help the user understand the complex language and systems being described.
In my current role we use presentation (show and tell) as one of our main forms of communication with peers and clients. Some of these include bi weekly show and tells to senior stakeholders in Public Health England. Alongside this we also deliver up skilling workshops to organisations we work alongside. In the images above you can see a recent workshop we held at NHS digital around building a CMS for content editors.
